Montgomery County Homeschool Model UN*

At Montgomery County Homeschool Model United Nations, we are a high school and middle

school team of students dedicated to understanding global issues, practicing diplomacy, and shaping ourselves into thoughtful, articulate leaders.

We participate in Model United Nations conferences where we represent countries, debate world problems, and work together to create solutions to those world problems.

We began MUN in Fall of 2024 and have continued throughout the Spring. We started out as a small class at our local homeschool co-op but have since grown to include homeschooled students in all of Montgomery County.

What is Model UN?

Model United Nations (MUN) is a mock United Nations. Students role-play as delegates representing different countries, just like in the real United Nations. There are some committees where students can role-play as historical people or even celebrities.

In MUN, students:

  • Research their positions on policies and perspectives on issues or problems given to them.

  • Debate in formal sessions, following parliamentary procedure.

  • Draft and create resolutions to solve problems such as climate change, conflict, or poverty.

  • Work together with other countries to create a resolution.

  •

The goal of MUN is not just to “win” debates but it’s to practice international diplomacy, develop public speaking and negotiation skills, and understand global challenges from multiple perspectives.
